Background of the Study :
Remittances have emerged as a crucial financial resource for households in many developing countries, offering a reliable source of income that can enhance living standards and stimulate local economies. In Nigeria, remittances sent by migrants have steadily increased in importance, particularly in urban centers such as Abuja (Adebisi, 2023). Over the period from 2000 to 2020, remittance inflows have provided a financial cushion for households, enabling them to meet daily needs, invest in education, and improve housing conditions. The influx of these funds has also contributed to local market development by increasing disposable income and fostering entrepreneurial activities. This study examines the multifaceted impact of remittances on household income in Abuja, considering both the direct monetary contributions and the broader socio-economic benefits. It investigates how remittance flows have influenced spending patterns, savings behavior, and investment decisions among households. The research also takes into account external factors such as migration trends and fluctuations in exchange rates, which can affect the volume and impact of remittances (Ibrahim, 2024; Olufemi, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Despite the acknowledged importance of remittances in supporting household income, there is a significant gap in understanding how these funds are optimally utilized in Abuja. While remittances are intended to alleviate economic hardships, variations in spending, investment, and saving patterns among recipients have led to inconsistent outcomes (Adebisi, 2023). Additionally, external factors such as volatile exchange rates and varying efficiencies of financial institutions further complicate the effective utilization of remittances. This study seeks to address these challenges by examining the relationship between remittance inflows and household income, thereby identifying key factors that influence the economic benefits of remittances (Ibrahim, 2024).
